I put together what we had. Please check to see if it makes sense and if I missed any direction, props, etc. I will check it again tomorrow afternoon and then post what we have by 6:00 PM. I think copy prompts are a good idea. Cathy

Action: Anchors at the news desk talking, shuffling papers while Hawaiian music plays in the background. Dim music as anchors look up and start the first news segment. Keep music low in background. Props: Anchors to wear Hawaiian shirts or other appropriate attire. Background behind desk with Hawaiian style decorations.
LS of all three. As Ben starts to tell the Aloha story, zoom in on him to a MS.
Ben: Aloha and welcome to the Big Kahuna Show! Here at the Big K we have lots of news, weather, sports, and what's on tap to tantalize you on the menu today. First let's go to a Big K history moment on a topic near and dear to our hearts, the Aloha shirt!
MS on Ben so you can see the shirt; zoom back out as he gets to the last line to see all three anchors.
Ben: Believe it or not, these shirts came about as a covering for the early natives as the missionaries coming to convert them didn't like looking at them naked! It took until about the mid-1930's for the bright colors and designs to be in production and popular, the brain child of a Honolulu Chinese merchant, said to be made from left over kimono material. The exotic souvenir is still popular today, and I for one, have a closet full, one for every occasion.
Pan over to Sharon as she talks and then MS as she introduces the sports section. Cut to Chrissy or pan over depending on where she is.
Sharon: Thanks for history flashback Peni'i and we look forward to your next piece on "Luaus, more than just a pig in the sand." Now let's check in with Kaliki- Maka and see what's happening out in the surf and sand.

Mahalo, Kalona! I’m Kaliki Maka on location at Hula Beach, the location of the popular dance competition, So You Think You Can Hula. Pandemonium struck when the judges announced earlier today that the competition was postponed due to an investigation that needs to occur. They would not give any details as to what that investigation may be regarding. According to our sources, however, the investigation may involve performance-enhancing coconut juice found in the dressing room of Kiki Haiku, the champion of So You Think You Can Hula for the last five years. It will break the hearts of many fans if this is true. This is the second coconut juice scandal of the year. As you may recall, windsurfing superstar Koko Kiwi was disgraced by having an asterisk put next to his name in the record books after being caught using coconut juice before a competition. We will be sure to keep you updated as this shocking story unfolds. And, remember kids, just say no! Back to you, Kalona!

Other than the brief sea breeze, it's going to be hot, hot, hot! (as Sharon says hot, hot, hot, sticks a giant sun on the map of the island) That's all I have to say about that! Back to you Peni'i!

Ben: Now we all know that Poi, a gooey purple paste made from taro root is a staple food in Hawaii, but it isn't real popular with our students for lunch! Let's go to Lepekaha, our "cuisinist extraordinare", for today's menu.

(Wearing apron and hat with fruits in front) Rebekkah: Did you know traditional luaus are eaten while sitting on the ground or floor without utensils? We won't be quite so traditional at our lunch luaus today since it would be kind of gross to eat with our hands, but we will still have some very special luau treats. You will enjoy huli-huli chicken, fried rice, sweet potatoes, and taro dinner rolls. Oh, and don't forget wonderfully sweet pineapple, mango, and papaya kabobs for dessert. So gear up your taste buds for some great Mea'ai, 'ai

A summer theme would be fun. Maybe something luau related (Hawaiian theme, we could all wear leis or something... the "Aloha News" or something similar??)
We could have beach-sounding music, waves sound effects, etc. Lunch choices could be pineapple kabobs, etc.
Just brainstorming...

I think I have a Hawaii type backdrop from Party City that we could use. I need to look at it and make sure it doesn't have holes or something weird. I think it looks sort of like a Tiki Hut. I also have a little Ukelele with Hawaii written on it. (srs)
I will not be at the class on the 17th but will be happy to write the news segment if someone else will be the anchor. Cathy

I think that looks awesome! I was wondering about the compilation of the document. Should we each write our parts, post them, and have one person compile them into the document that gets turned in? On second thought, I will copy the chart from the assignment on here, and people can fill-in information. When everyone has put the stories in, someone can copy the table to a word document and clean it up before turning it in. When I inserted the table, the formatting messed up, and it looks crazy. Not sure if this will work, but it's worth a try. If anyone else has a better way to do this, please share. Rebekah

Here is an extra story if we see we need to fill more time.
(Anchors wearing several leis, enough to be over the top) If you've ever been to Hawaii, many times you are greeted by a local with the gift of a lei placed on your head or neck. What you receving is actually a gift created to honor their Polynesian gods. Lucky for us, or most of us anyway, we wear them today as a necklace or headdress where as in the old days that was all they wore with a few vines draped on for decoration! Many items are used to create leis besides the traditinal flower such as whale or walrus bone, shells and feathers. If you were a true Hawaiian, you might wear your lei at any type of work activity, celebration or ritual. So next time you want to be a little festive at work or just hanging around the hosue, put on a lei and bring a little Big Kahuna fun into your day. (as they say the last sentence, have leis come flying in from all directions at the anchor)
I put my sports story in. I wrote myself as the sports anchor, but I'm flexible as to what part I do.
Here are some thoughts:
How are we going to have graphics and sounds for the piece?
Any thoughts on how to do the beach background for the sports piece (not sure if we have access to a green screen or we could just put some props behind the sports person)?
What else needs to be done that isn't already delegated?
Does everyone know their Hawaiian name and what part you are dong? If so, we could go ahead and put the names in to the script.

7/13/09: I think we could use a CD or download the cliips from FreeplayMusic and play it in the background. Two that could work are The Pineapple Shanty or the Hawaiian Chug. I also have the Hawaii Five-0 music which would be a good sports intro. File links here.
For the sports background, maybe something as simple a poster with a coconut and a circle with the line through it. It would be great if we had green screen techonology so we could put a beach behind you but I don't know what's going to be available. Maybe wear a hat, zinc on your nose and sunglasses to give the impression of outside?

Hey guys,
I am back from my vacation and ready to concentrate and contribute to this project. I see you have all been hard at work. I like the Hawaiin theme and I have a Hawaiin shirt that I can wear. I am not sure exactly what role you want me to play because there isn't a master list showing who is doing what. I am up for anything. If someone well tell me what role needs to be played (anchor, weather...etc.) I will get to writing something for the script. Also, this appears like it is going to be a lot of text. Are we going to have prompts, some sort of teleprompter, or are we going to try to be thespians and memorize the script and perform it from memory? Let me know what needs to be done, what props we need, and anything else.
